As a single dad, life changed drastically when I became the full-time caregiver for my two young children. At first, we were living between friends' and family members' homes, but it became clear we needed a more stable solution. After contacting the Housing Executive, we ended up in a hotel—our “home” for five challenging weeks.
Living in one room with my kids,
"I tried to make it an adventure, building duvet forts and decorating for Halloween. I wanted to shield them from the strain, but the lack of basic facilities—a fridge, a microwave, or even adequate storage—took its toll."
Every meal was a challenge, and daily commutes to keep them in their schools, often taking up to an hour and a half each way, draining my savings and our spirits.
When we finally moved into Simon Community’s Conway Court,
"It felt like a lifeline."
For the first time in weeks, I could cook proper meals and store milk without waste. The relief of having a kitchen, a fridge, and even a freezer—things I once took for granted—felt like winning the lottery. My children had space to play, and I had moments of quiet once they fell asleep.
But even in this temporary safe space, challenges remained. The kids still ask if we’re going “back to the big building,” not “going home.” Decorating is limited, and the rooms feel like a blank canvas we can’t fully make our own. I have seen a shift in my daughter, as she sometimes struggles to get out of bed in the mornings and her frustration and confusion are evident in her behaviour.
The uncertainty of our future lingers. Will our next move bring us closer to their schools? Will it be safe and secure enough to raise my family long-term?
"I dream of giving them a real home—a place where they can invite friends over, celebrate birthdays, and feel like they belong."
There’s a weight that comes with being a single dad in this position—a sense of guilt, even shame, despite knowing I’ve done my best. I want my kids to look back and feel they had a happy childhood, full of love and security, despite these challenges.
Until then,
"I hold on to the small wins. The support from Simon Community, the smiles of my children, and the hope that soon, we’ll find a place to truly call home."
