24th April 2026Challenging Stigma Through Lived Experience
Open Door – Issue 4
At Simon Community, everything we do is rooted in one shared commitment: ending homelessness in Northern Ireland. That commitment is made possible by the generosity, belief and trust of our supporters – people who give us the confidence to be bold, try new approaches, and develop services that respond to homelessness in creative and lasting ways.
That spirit of openness and trust runs through Issue 4 of Open Door, which feels especially meaningful to us.
This edition has been guest edited by Stuart Copeland, who brings with him lived experience of homelessness. Working alongside Stuart has been a powerful reminder that homelessness is never just about the statistics or even the housing itself. It is about people – their knowledge, their resilience, and the importance of truly listening to what they have to say.
Stuart has personally selected every article featured in this issue, placing lived experience at the very heart of the magazine. His focus is clear: to challenge the stigma and stereotypes that continue to surround homelessness, and to invite us all to look beyond assumptions to the real people behind the label.
Through Stuart’s reflections and the stories shared in this edition, we’re reminded how easily voices can be overlooked and why it matters that people with lived experience of homelessness are not only heard, but trusted to lead and help shape the conversation.
Stuart offers an honest insight into what homelessness can look and feel like: the fear and uncertainty, but also the resilience, strength and hope that can emerge when the right support is available at the right time. His perspective reflects exactly why our work matters.
Because of the support we receive, people are not defined by their circumstances. They are supported to reclaim their voice, their confidence, and their future.
Perhaps most importantly, Open Door reminds us that homelessness is not something that happens to “other” people. With just a change in circumstances, it could affect any one of us – or someone we love.
We hope this edition gives readers the same sense of perspective, challenge and inspiration that Stuart has brought to all of us.
Thank you for standing with Simon Community, and for continuing to be part of the movement to end homelessness in Northern Ireland.
