Laoise's path into homelessness began in April 2023, a casualty of domestic violence. Stepping into Simon Community’s Newry project for the first time, she felt a mix of nerves, apprehension and completely out of her comfort zone.
For Laoise, being a mother who is homeless posed specific challenges. Not being able to see her children daily, or provide them with a safe home weighed heavily on her. Sleeping in crash beds and the inability to confide in friends about her living situation tested her resilience and added to her burden.
Despite the hardships, Laoise found some silver linings. She learned not to judge others' situations hastily and gained a deeper understanding of the complexities of homelessness.
With the support of the Newry team, Laoise has maintained contact with her children through regular communication with her social worker. She remains in Simon Community’s temporary accommodation project in Newry, awaiting housing arrangements for herself and her children.
Looking ahead, Laoise hopes to receive training and work towards a career assisting homeless individuals in her community. She acknowledges the support of Simon Community, grateful for their assistance during her darkest moments.
When asked what advice Laoise would give to other mothers facing a similar situation she said:
To all the mammies, I know it’s hard but we have to leave the past in the past and look to the future. A future where we get to spend Mother’s day with our kids. I know some days it can be hard to get out of bed. But, take your time, set goals that you know you will achieve, and take one day at a time.
Rebuild yourself so you are the best for your kids. It won’t happen overnight but as long as you keep fighting it will happen. And it will be worth it. It’s okay to ask for help we are only human after all. Just remember you are loved and you do have people fighting with and for you.
I am so thankful for the Simon Community in getting me back on my feet. Helping me daily with my own struggles and being a friendly non-judgemental face.
This Mother's Day, let Laoise's story serve as a reminder of the resilience and determination of mothers facing adversity. Through her journey, she exemplifies the strength and courage needed to overcome obstacles and build a brighter future.
