Ava's Story

Growing up in foster care, I spent 14 years with my foster mum but over time, things changed. Our relationship became strained, conversations turned into arguments, and the house no longer felt like a place I could call home.

Growing up in foster care, I spent 14 years with my foster mum but over time, things changed. Our relationship became strained, conversations turned into arguments, and the house no longer felt like a place I could call home.

Eventually, things became too difficult to manage.

"I moved out just to try and keep things from getting worse between us."

Leaving wasn’t an easy decision, but I knew it was the right one. I had no idea what would come next, but I needed space. That’s when I came to Simon Community in June 2024.

"The first 24 to 28 hours were tough. I felt scared, nervous, and anxious… I was close to tears."

I didn’t really know what to expect. I had heard so many things about homelessness services, and not all of them were positive. I wasn’t sure if I would fit in or if this would feel like another temporary stop rather than a fresh start.

The staff did what they could to make things easier for me.

"They were great. They helped move my belongings quickly, so there wasn’t much time to overthink everything."

That support meant I didn’t have to sit alone with my thoughts for too long. Instead of dwelling on everything that had happened, I could focus on settling in.

At first, I kept to myself. I had never been in an environment like this before, and I didn’t know how to interact with the others. I had heard so many things about temporary accommodation and part of me was still unsure of how it would be.

"I found myself waiting for others to approach me first. But once I settled in, I realised it was nothing like the stories I’d heard."

I started to see that the people here weren’t so different from me. Everyone had their own reasons for being here, their own challenges, but there was a sense of understanding. The more time I spent in the space, the more comfortable I felt.

The staff played a big part in that. They were there when I needed them, always ready to help.

"I’m very independent, but it’s reassuring knowing the staff are always there to help with anything—even removing spiders!"

Since coming to Simon Community, I’ve been focusing on my future. I’m attending tech, working towards my qualifications, and actively job hunting. I already have interviews lined up, and I’m hopeful about what’s ahead. I’ve also completed my childcare course and work placement, which has given me a clearer idea of what I want for myself.

More than anything, I want stability—a place of my own where I can build my future.

"Living here has changed my perspective a lot. I’ve really opened up, and I’ve learned not to judge based on rumours or what others say. You never know what it’s really like until you experience it yourself."

I came here not knowing what to expect, but I’ve found more than just a place to stay. I’ve found support, opportunities, and a chance to move forward.
