Pamela joined Simon Community in July 2024, combining her background in care with lived experience of the realities of homelessness. Before joining us, Pamela worked in the private sector until redundancy led her down a different path. After a period of working in various part-time roles, she moved into care work, eventually becoming a senior community care worker.
Her motivation was rooted in personal experience. Following a marriage breakdown, Pamela found herself staying at Ashmore House in Derry/Londonderry, an experience that gave her a new perspective and a gratitude for the support she received.
“I know what it feels like to be homeless, and I’m forever grateful for that time,” she says. Now, I want to help others the way I was helped.”
In Larne, Pamela works as an Accommodation & Support Worker — a role that’s all about being present, adaptable, and responsive to whatever a client might need that day. Whether it’s providing emotional support, reminding someone about a GP appointment, helping them access benefits, or encouraging independent living skills like managing money or preparing for housing — Pamela is there to walk alongside each person on their journey.
“You become a little bit of everything in this role, being there when someone needs support — even just to be heard — can make all the difference.”
Some days are tough. There are emotionally challenging moments, and like anyone in the sector, Pamela recognises the importance of looking after her own mental health.
“Taking time to chill out and clear your head is so important — especially when the job can weigh heavy.”
But the rewards are worth it. Seeing someone move into their own home, achieve a personal goal, or simply smile after a hard day reminds Pamela why the work matters.
“I love helping people live more fulfilling lives. Building trust, seeing their progress — it gives you such a sense of purpose.”
Outside of work, Pamela enjoys walking her two dogs, Dolly and Charlie, spending time at the beach with her wife Nicole, and taking spontaneous drives along the coast.
“It clears the mind, crime and comedy shows are always a go-to when I want to relax.”
Being featured in this story is a proud moment for Pamela, but she’s quick to shine a light on her team.
“I’m so proud to work with the fantastic group at Larne temporary accommodation service— they’ve been my teachers, my guides, and my support from day one.”
For anyone thinking about a similar role, Pamela’s advice is simple and empowering.
“Just go for it. Don’t hold back, even if you have doubts. You never know how much your own experiences can help someone else. There’s no such thing as ‘I can’t’ — you can. I’m living proof of that.”
If you’re looking for a role with purpose, a career at Simon Community could be your chance to change lives — just like Pamela does every day.
