Simon Community Launches 2025 Christmas Appeal with Caitlin’s Story.

This Christmas, Simon Community is sharing Caitlin’s journey to highlight the reality of homelessness and the difference your support can make.

Caitlin grew up in a loving family with her parents and siblings. Her childhood was happy and secure, and at 18, she moved into her own home full of hope for the future. Life was normal - she worked, paid her rent, and managed well.

But when Covid hit, everything changed. Over time, her rent rose from £650 to £870, and despite her best efforts, she couldn’t keep up.

Caitlin began skipping meals and relying on her mum for dinner just to make ends meet. Each month became harder, forcing her to choose between heating her home or eating.

When she became pregnant with her son Jack, she knew she needed stability. Moving back home wasn’t an option - her brother had already returned with his young family, and there simply wasn’t space.

During her pregnancy, Caitlin stayed with a family friend, but after Jack was born, the arrangement became too stressful for everyone.

She felt like she was in the way and, holding her newborn baby, realised they had nowhere to go. In tears, she called the Housing Executive. They placed her in a hotel for a week, then a hostel in North Belfast.

Life there was difficult - strict rules, no visitors, and the isolation of caring for a newborn without support. Sharing basic facilities with strangers was a stark contrast to the independence she once had.

Eventually, Caitlin and Jack moved to Simon Community’s Family's Accommodation - Conway Court.

For the first time in months, Caitlin could breathe.

The staff helped her with essentials when she had very little. Last Christmas was still tough - she felt like they didn’t belong anywhere and couldn’t give Jack the festive season she dreamed of.

But this year is different. With Simon Community’s support, Caitlin has had the time and space to rebuild her life. She’s just been offered a permanent home, and soon Jack will have his own bedroom.

“I’ve gone from feeling hopeless to feeling excited about the future again,” Caitlin says.

This Christmas, she’ll decorate a tree in their own living room. Jack will have space to play, and Caitlin will finally feel like they belong.

Homelessness is happening now. With your support, Simon Community can provide stability and a safety net for families like Caitlin and Jack.
