Story

Sherry

At 19, Sherry has overcome years in care and homelessness. After 10 months at Simon Community’s Mount Street Mews, she rebuilt her life and now lives independently. Sherry’s journey highlights the life-changing impact of support and community.

Sherry has been living at our young person’s service in Coleraine since January 2024.

“When I first arrived, I was scared. I didn’t know what to expect, but everyone was so welcoming. It really surprised me.”

After entering the care system at age 12, she stayed until she turned 17. Post-care, she bounced between her parents’ homes before temporarily living with a friend in October 2023. When she first moved into Mount Street Mews, Sherry was taken aback by the quality of her new flat.

“It was better than I expected. At first, I was scared, but after a few days, I started to settle in.”

The constant presence of the staff played a pivotal role in Sherry’s adjustment.

“Knowing the staff were there all the time really helped my mental health, I love making them laugh and chatting with them. It feels easy and comfortable to talk about anything.”

Sherry found joy in sharing her passion for cooking with the team and other residents.

“One of my favourite things to do is cook. I love sharing my recipes. It brings everyone together.”

Beyond emotional support, Simon Community staff worked closely with Sherry  to help her path to independence. They assisted her with increasing her housing points, staying on top of her benefits appointments, and accessing additional help through the well-being practitioner service.

In less than a year, Sherry has experienced an incredible transformation.

“In just 10 months, I’m in a much healthier headspace. I feel ready to move on, but I know I’ll miss the support of the staff, but they’re always there when you need them.”

Sherry’s dreams extend beyond her own independence. Once she secures a place of her own, she plans to support her younger brother, who will soon turn 17.

“I don’t want him to go through the same tough experiences I had after leaving care.”

For anyone facing similar struggles, Sherry explains

“All for one, one for all. There are many people living here, but the staff are always here to make a difference.”

As Sherry prepares to take her next steps, she carries with her a sense of optimism and gratitude.
