Project Manager Rachele’s One Big Sleep Out

How one night outside strengthened Rachele’s resolve to fight homelessness and support young people across Northern Ireland.

At Simon Community, we are constantly inspired by the people who stand with us – those who not only work on the frontline of homelessness support but who also choose to go one step further. Rachele, Project Manager at one of our Young People services, is one of those people.

Rachele joined Simon Community in May 2020, at a time when homelessness support was facing unprecedented challenges. Since then, she has brought dedication, energy, and compassion into every part of her role. In 2024, she decided to take part in One BIG Sleep Out, our flagship event that raises vital funds and awareness to tackle homelessness in Northern Ireland.

For Rachele, the decision was deeply meaningful.

“I wanted to be part of the change to help raise awareness about the homelessness crisis in Northern Ireland. Having people come together for the same cause felt motivating for me.”

Spending a night outside offered her a new perspective – one that echoed what so many of the people we support experience every single day.

“We often hear the term ‘rough sleeping’, but I had to ask myself  – did I really understand what that meant? One night outside gave me a very small glimpse into what it feels like to have no safe place to go. I had a sleeping bag and a warm meal, luxuries many don’t have. It was challenging, but I can’t imagine how it must feel day after day.”

Working directly with young people, Rachele witnesses the systemic barriers they face as they strive for independence.

“Right now, the biggest challenge is the lack of housing. So many of our clients make huge progress while staying in our services but have nowhere to move on to. Private rentals are increasingly difficult to secure, and the need for guarantors is another barrier. It’s a battle so many people are facing.”

She believes that one of the biggest misconceptions about homelessness is its simplicity – when in reality, it is anything but that.

“It isn’t just about lacking a roof – it’s about lacking stability, security and a chance to thrive.”

This is why events like One BIG Sleep Out matter. They spark conversations, challenge assumptions, and bring communities together to demand better.

“Events like the Big Sleep Out help break the stigma that homelessness can carry. Homelessness is rarely a choice. By raising awareness, we can challenge policy makers and push for change.”

Despite the cold, the discomfort, and the emotional weight of the night, Rachele would encourage anyone to take part.

“Though it can be challenging, it really highlighted for me the reason why I do the work I do. Embrace the challenge – it’s an opportunity to meet so many people and hear their stories.”

Rachele’s commitment reminds us why we do this work – and why we need others to stand with us. Change is possible, but it takes all of us.

Together, we can break the cycle of homelessness.
