Staff Story
Meet Sinead
Sinead joined Simon Community in January 2022 as a Support Worker at Flush Park in Lisburn. Today, she is a Senior Practitioner, helping to support both the people who stay at the service and the staff who work alongside them.
For Sinead, supporting people through some of the most challenging periods of their lives isn’t just a job. It’s an opportunity to help people rediscover their confidence and take steps towards a future.
Sinead joined Simon Community in January 2022 as a Support Worker at Flush Park in Lisburn. Today, she is a Senior Practitioner, helping to support both the people who stay at the service and the staff who work alongside them.
Before joining Simon Community, Sinead worked in retail while also studying Psychology at university. She later completed a Master’s degree in Criminology and Criminal Justice, developing a strong interest in supporting people experiencing mental health challenges and addiction.
“I’ve always wanted to work in a role where I could help people. Every day is different, and there’s always something new to learn.”
As a Senior Practitioner, Sinead plays a key role in the day-to-day running of the service. She supports staff with everything from client support planning and housing applications to wellbeing, training and guidance. She works closely with her manager to ensure the service continues to provide the best possible support for people experiencing homelessness.
While the practical aspects of the role are important, it’s the relationships she builds with people that mean the most.
“The best part of the job is seeing people achieve things they didn’t think they could do. Sometimes what seems like a small step to someone else is a huge achievement for the person taking it.”
That progress doesn’t always happen overnight. Sinead says one of the biggest challenges can be helping people stay motivated when they’re facing uncertainty or difficult life circumstances.
“It can take time, patience and encouragement. But when someone overcomes their fears and starts to believe in themselves, it’s incredible to see.”
Working at Simon Community has also challenged many of the assumptions people hold about homelessness.
“This job has taught me that homelessness can happen to anyone. There are often perceptions about what someone experiencing homelessness is like, but every person has their own story.”
For Sinead, it’s often the small moments that leave the biggest impression.
“Something as simple as giving someone a birthday card can mean so much. Some people have never received one before. Seeing the smile on their face reminds you how important human connection is.”
One person she supported particularly stands out.
When he first arrived at the service, anxiety made it difficult for him to leave his room or engage with others. Over time, with support from staff and participation in wellbeing activities, his confidence began to grow. He built friendships and got involved in activities around the service.
“His personality and sense of humour really started to shine through,”
After almost two years at the service, he recently moved into his own home.
“Watching that journey from someone who was too anxious to speak to anyone to someone who felt ready to live independently was incredibly rewarding.”
Reflecting on her time at Simon Community, Sinead says she feels proud to be part of an organisation that helps people create positive change in their lives.
“Hearing people’s move-on stories reminds me why we’re here and the difference we’re making together.”
Outside of work, Sinead enjoys Pilates, watching crime dramas and rom-coms, and taking time to appreciate a beautiful sunset.
For anyone considering a career in homelessness services, her advice is simple:
“Go for it. It’s challenging and rewarding in equal measure. If you’re adaptable, enjoy working with people and want to make a difference, it’s a fantastic career. There are so many opportunities to learn, develop and grow.”
