Support Worker – Kelly’s Story

Kelly’s journey to Simon Community has been shaped by a wide range of experiences, all centred around supporting people.

In this staff story, Kelly shares what it’s really like to be an Accommodation and Community Support Worker at Simon Community and the impact the role has on people’s lives.

Kelly’s journey to becoming an a Support Worker has been shaped by a wide range of people‑centred roles – all of which helped build the empathy, resilience, and practical skills she brings to her work today.

After spending seven years in Australia working as a pharmacy assistant and later in a dental clinic, Kelly gained early experience in supporting people through everyday challenges. She explains that these roles taught her the importance of patience and empathy and showed her how meaningful it can be to help people in practical ways.

When she returned home, Kelly moved into the Human Resources field, supporting colleagues through training and personal development. An experience that strengthened her passion for helping others grow in confidence.

“I really enjoyed being part of people’s professional journeys.”

Today, Kelly is part of our Armagh adult temporary accommodation service, which includes 30 bed spaces. Her role is varied and fast‑paced, something she values:

“No two shifts are ever the same.”

As a key worker for several clients, Kelly supports individuals to develop personalised support plans and work toward their goals. Much of her work involves partnering with the Housing Executive to help residents move into permanent accommodation, while also linking people with specialist services for mental health, addiction support, and other needs.

Kelly’s commitment to building community shines through in the small but meaningful moments – from organising cook-ups and nature walks, to helping create a warm and welcoming atmosphere on Christmas Day. She recently attended the Youth Homelessness Strategy launch alongside a client involved in shaping the strategy, describing it as:

“A very proud moment to witness.”

The role is not without its challenges. Kelly sees first-hand how the housing crisis and limited resources affect people at their most vulnerable. But the impact of her work keeps her motivated:

“The most rewarding part is seeing what can happen when people are given an opportunity – watching someone grow in confidence or move into their own home is incredibly meaningful.”

One moment that stands out for Kelly is supporting a resident who progressed from temporary accommodation to a self-contained flat, then into full‑time employment, and eventually into a permanent home of their own. She reflected:

“What made it so meaningful was that this was achieved through their own hard work.”

For Kelly, support work is rooted in dignity and respect:

“Everyone deserves to feel safe and have a place they can call home. Difficult circumstances don’t define a person’s worth or potential.”

Outside of work, Kelly enjoys staying active, spending time outdoors, road trips across Ireland, gardening, and being with her family – all of which help her recharge for the important work she does.

Kelly encourages anyone considering a career in this sector to bring patience, resilience, and a willingness to keep learning:

“The moments of trust, progress, and connection make it all worthwhile.”

If you are looking for a role with purpose, a career at Simon Community could be your chance to change lives – just like Kelly does every day.
