Rachele I

One Big Sleep OutRachele, has been part of Simon Community since May 2020, and currently working as a project manager at our one of our Young People services. Last year, she joined hundreds of others at One BIG Sleep Out. Our flagship event that raises awareness and vital funds to tackle homelessness in Northern Ireland.

For Rachele, the motivation was clear:

"I wanted to be part of the change to help raise awareness about the homelessness crisis in Northern Ireland. Having people come together for the same cause felt motivating for me."

The experience gave her powerful insights into what many of the people we support face daily.

"We often hear the term ‘rough sleeping
’, but I had to ask myself – did I really understand what that meant? One night outside gave me a very small glimpse into what it feels like to have no safe place to go. I had a sleeping bag and a warm meal, luxuries many don’t have. It was challenging, but I can’t imagine how it must feel day after day."

Working at Simon Community, Rachele sees first-hand the barriers people face.

"Right now, the biggest challenge is the lack of housing. So many of our clients make huge progress while staying in our services but have nowhere to move on to. Private rentals are increasingly difficult to secure, and the need for guarantors is another barrier. It’s a battle so many people are facing."

She believes that homelessness is often misunderstood:

"It isn’t just about lacking a roof – it’s about lacking stability, security and a chance to thrive."

That’s why awareness events matter.

"Events like the Big Sleep Out help break the stigma that homelessness can carry. Homelessness is rarely a choice. By raising awareness, we can challenge policy makers and push for change."

Would she recommend it to others? Absolutely.

"Though it can be challenging, it really highlighted for me the reason why I do the work I do. Embrace the challenge – it’s an opportunity to meet so many people and hear their stories."
