Ciara McK

Ciara has spent over a decade of her life dedicated to supporting young people through some of their most vulnerable moments. Based in our Community Support Service in Portadown, Ciara has been a vital part of the Simon Community team since 2009, using her down-to-earth approach to help people find a place they can call home.

Her journey began with a degree in youth work, which took her to Australia, where she completed a work placement supporting young people involved in the justice system and women accessing vital services. That experience sparked a passion that shaped the rest of her career.

On returning home, Ciara worked as a support worker and senior officer in supported accommodation before transitioning into community support nearly 16 years ago, a role she still holds today, helping to shape and grow the support we offer in the community.

In her current role, Ciara works directly with young people facing or at risk of homelessness. She provides practical support and advice to help them secure accommodation and live independently. From liaising with local Housing Executive to working alongside social services, Ciara is a trusted advocate for the people she supports.

“Some clients have no one to provide them with support or advice. They don’t know how to secure accommodation or manage independent living. Being in this line of work means I get to be that person for them.”

The job isn’t without its challenges. Over the years, Ciara has seen it become harder for people to find secure tenancies. But even in the face of these growing difficulties, she remains hopeful and focused on the impact she can make.

“When a young person gets a place they can call home and feel safe in, that’s the best part of the job.”

Whether it's temporary accommodation, social housing, or a private rental, knowing someone is no longer at risk of homelessness is Ciara’s proudest achievement.

Outside of work, Ciara recharges by spending time with her children and playing Gaelic football with G4MO (Gaelic for Mothers & Others). It’s her way of finding balance in a role that requires so much heart.

When asked what advice she’d give to someone considering a similar path, Ciara keeps it simple

“Go for it. The job has its’ challenges, but the rewards are worth it.”
